Do you want to learn. Verified Purchase. A serious Book. Do you want to learn I thought a have enough knowledge Everything great, nice book! Covers teh subject of risk management and bet placing perfectly, tons of information, graphs information. More of a 'This is what will happen if yo do this' type of book than one that tells you just how to pick a horse, so heavily maths based.

A decent introduction to the concept of value betting. The focus is very much on staking strategies and little attention is given to rating systems. There is no discussion of weighing subjective evidence such as motivation or fatigue. Good use of simulation highlights the need to set stake size correctly in order to balance the desire for bankroll growth with the need to avoid bankruptcy. There is some decent material on overrounds in different markets and the it is the only book I've read that talks about finding 'arithmetic value' - comparing the odds against the market average.

This is a useful book for the bettor who wants to take the game more seriously. I would like to give it four stars but it is not well-rounded enough for a general beginners guide and lacking in the modelling insights that could be useful to more experienced players. The author also has a tendency to write a paragraph when a sentence would have sufficed.

Profitable betting is about finding an edge, whether it's subjective your opinion or objective ratings systems , and turning this edge into profit using a sensible staking plan. This book deals with various staking plans and shows how each one performs over the long term, essential reading if you want to turn your edge into profits. There isn't a lot of information on finding an edge, though, and for this I would recommend another book: Profitable Football Betting by Paul Steele.

Although it is nearly 10 years old, the ratings systems can be applied to the present day. This isn't the perfect gambling book, but it easily stands comparison with the best of what is out there and is streets ahead of much of the competition. Its focus is principally on the risk management side of things - an essential, and much neglected in the other books in this area , facet to making a profit consistently from gambling.

Some of the graphs and tables can make for heavy reading, but the essential truth is there and a quick flick through most of them just serves to reinforce the truths which are clearly developed in the main text. Where this book scores most highly is in its positioning of sports wagering as a form of investment with justifications and in its thorough comparative evaluation of various staking strategies and the risks associated with them.

On its own the book won't make you a successful gambler, but I'll bet ha ha that you won't find ANY successful gambler long term who isn't comfortable with or at least intuitively familiar with the concepts developed in this book.

If you've ever been even remotely tempted to use progresive staking systems then this book is worth buying alone for it's damning evidence on the Martingale system in particular. If I'd had this the year it was first published it would have paid for itself fifty - fold in no time! Having financed much of my 'gambling education' the hard and expensive way first, it is at least very satisfying to find that my current strategies bear a very close relation to those outlined.

Apart from a thorough analysis of the part played by different staking systems, sound logical arguments are given for at least the general type of bets more likely to lead to long term profits and some of the sports where such bets are more readily available. To an extent, reading this has merely served to reinforce alot of stuff I had already found out the hard way but is none the worse for that and essential reading for any betting novice.

Where this book really scores for me though is in the various methods outlined for the examination of an existing betting record with a view to predicting long term performance. In my view, such tools are essential unless you already happen to have a consistently profitable system statistically proven over many hundreds or thousands of bets.
