With no Section C opposition in sight before the semi-final at least, the incentive is great. Voted Powerade School of the Year in and with 10 of last year's league-winning cup semi-finalists back in tow, hopes are high for another good showing from the Bray school this year.
Although undefeated in qualifying for the league semi-final, they were held by both CUS and Kilkenny who topped the group along the way. A narrow defeat to Blackrock in the first ever visit by a full 'Rock Senior team to Gerard's augurs well. Centre Jett Desmond is a brother of Zach, who captained the team to the school's first semi-final against 'Rock at Lansdowne Road.
If they can remain injury free then a run to the semi-final and perhaps beyond seems a realistic aspiration. They would describe their season to date as having been up and down, but with Mary's it tends to be generally more up than down. They performed particularly well in an early-season tournament in Gloucester, finishing runners-up on a score line to the red-hot Bristol Academy. Ireland U lock Jerry Sexton brother of Ireland out-half Jonny captains a squad that includes 10 back from last year's unit which were beaten narrowly by eventual winners Clongowes in a feisty semi-final.
Hugh McDonnell has also represented the Irish schoolboys at cricket. Senior finalists three times in the last five years and Junior finalists for the last four running, yet Michael's have only one outright success to show for it. Despite all the disappointments, the one certainty is that the Ailesbury Road school has now a level of competitive consistency which is the equal of any other in the province.
That lone Senior Cup win fails to reflect the ultra-competitive force that St Michael's now are. And once again this year they have a squad oozing talent. The hugely influential McGrath nephew of former Ireland flanker and ERC chief executive Derek is captain of a squad that includes eight back from last year's very impressive beaten finalists.
To go one step further than they are certainly going to have to do it the hard way, given that they find themselves with the most difficult route of all: should they negotiate Belvedere, they would probably have to beat Kilkenny or St Mary's followed by Blackrock or Clongowes just to get back to the final.
Terenure appear to have landed the most generous draw of the heavyweights, but Padraig Forde has been around the block often enough to know that right from the get-go against Gonzaga, any route to the final for the 'Nure is littered with land-mines. For very obvious reasons that game against Bobby Byrne and Gonzaga is the be all and end all to their season. They have no God-given right to look beyond it, nor will they. That said, the 'Nure -- beaten finalists in and winners of their 10th and last title back in '03 -- have managed to avoid every other Section C school until the RDS final, should they make it that far.
On the developing wave of Junior Cup success in and , Forde oversees a squad that includes five back from last year. Seventeen of that Junior Cup-winning squad from '09 have made the jump to Senior. Perhaps therein hangs the doubt. Could it be a year too soon? But the same question was asked of Clongowes Junior winners in '08 12 months ago, and we all know the answer to that one now! Like St Mary's, their form has been inconsistent, but come cup time it can be taken as read they will deliver.
With Gonzaga first up, there is no other option. Leinster U centre James Kearns captains a Monkstown squad including 10 back from last year's Murray Cup runners-up and with other representative players in full-back Mark Rogers and right-wing Ben Howard.
It has been an injury-plagued season, but they now seem to have a full hand from which to pick from for both the Vinnie Murray and Senior Challenge Cup campaigns. Whichever team it is, they will be in good competitive shape, given the lead-in to that winner-takes-all game. With five teams qualifying for the main Section C competition from the Section B league, the game to avoid is the play-off for that fifth automatic Senior Cup place. Against the spirit of the play-off principle, some teams opt for the Vinnie Murray route, thereby making the one-off game competitive in name only.
That has been the case in times past, but not this year, given that the prize for winning is a fair crack at the top end of the draw, while the losers will almost certainly have to face Blackrock in the first round proper. So, having lost out to King's Hospital in the pre-Christmas play-off, such appears to be the Newbridge lot this time round.
It is a young Newbridge squad led by William O'Brien -- one of four back from last year. Unfortunately the talented Brown is struggling with a long-term injury. Leicester skipper and former Newbridge great Geordan Murphy will have an added interest, given the presence of his nephew Adam Murphy in the squad. Realistically, though, a shot at the Murray Cup seems the most likely route. Despite finishing fourth in their league section, this is one team for whom the final picture fails to tell the total story.
They lost to the three teams above them by two points or less, so anyone who writes off Pres Bray on finishing position alone, does so at their peril. They are well organised and well disciplined in defence, and with 10 back from last year, there is an abundance of experience.
Unfortunately Michael Douglas, who shipped a long-term injury at the start of the season, is not yet available. Adam Kenny is a member of the Wicklow Gaelic football schools team. Powerful prop Murphy is a son of former Pres and Greystones stalwart Liam. Downey is the younger brother of former Pres and Leinster Schools player John.
Irish Schools winger and All-Ireland m champion Kenny captains the side. Despite being drawn in the tough end of the Vinnie Murray draw, there is no reason why outright success in that competition allied to qualification to face Clongowes cannot be achieved in the next few weeks. The talent is certainly there. That was the year the now Balinteer-based school ruled Leinster.
In they came close again when a particularly strong Senior side, including Eric Miller and Ray McIlreavy, now coaching at St Gerard's and King's Hospital respectively, led Clongowes in the semi-final before eventually bowing out. The goals set by Craig Petrie and Iain Wallace for the squad of are nowhere near as high. That said, with 11 back from last year and led by playmaker Greg Hawe son of former Wesley Schools and successful club out-half Adrian 'Lefty' they are well capable of putting it up to any opposition on the day.
While league form disappointed, the early-season omens were good, with success at the Topflight Four Nations Tournament, where they lifted the Plate after beating Ysgol Glantaf from Cardiff in the final. The draw in the Vinnie Murray has been kind too, with a bye in the first round followed by a tilt at Templeogue in the quarter-final. That match is scheduled for Anglesea Road on the January 26, with the dual prize of Senior Cup qualification where KH, whom they have already beaten, await , plus a place in the last four of the Murray Cup.
The 'Logue will of course see it differently, but it is Wesley who appear the better equipped to make it through. This year's team includes three Beakey brothers: Mark and Kevin are twins and play in the back-row, while David plays at out-half. Last year: Beaten by Gonzaga in Vinnie Murray quarter-final.
De La Salle have a bye in the first round but in the Murray Cup quarter-final the Churchtown school will have to displace Newbridge College to earn the even more difficult challenge of Blackrock in the Senior Cup first round proper. The Vinnie Murray draw hasn't been kind. If they can progress there, Newpark are likely to face a repeat of that pre-Christmas final to determine who gets to meet Clongowes in the main draw.
The omens are good after that victory. Making their debut in the Vinnie Murray Cup, the rookie team will have to hit the ground running to overcome Skerries in the first round and then the winners of Pres Bray v Newpark Comprehensive to secure a date with defending champions Clongowes in the main draw.
Despite getting a bye in the opening round of the Vinnie Murray, they face a tough quarter-final hurdle in the meeting with Wesley College at Anglesea Road on January If successful, King's Hospital await in the first round of the main event. Last year: Didn't qualify for main draw. Beaten by St Andrew's in quarter-finals of Murray Cup.

Two-a-days in training camp have been eliminated, and teams can hold only 14 padded practices throughout the entire regular season. The Rams ran a study, and concluded that it now takes players about three years to have the same amount of practice time they would have got in one year under the old CBA. There have been 24 trades this calendar year, compared with 10 at the same date I , and 4 in The draft may not be as important as it used to be, but it still carries plenty of weight.
But whereas draft picks used to be counted on to be the cornerstone of a team, now they are viewed more as low-cost and fill-the-gap type players. The new CBA instituted a new rookie wage scale that has made most rookies tremendous value locked in at below-market rates for four seasons. On the flat at Doncaster, Haydock, Leicester and Ripon. All-weather racing at Wolverhampton. The presence of Blaklion in the field, carrying close to twelve stone means that we have three horses down the bottom out of the handicap.
With all the rain they had Friday morning and at the start of racing on Friday plus the rain expected Friday night I can see the ground getting properly soft and I don't fancy betting anything woth a really big weight over this marathon trip. I decided to simply look at the horses that are in the handicap, racing off their "correct" mark, and also to not go for anything with eleven stone or more.
That might easily mean I have elimintaed the winner but I'll take that risk and leave myself with "just" the odd thirteen tochoose from. I also decided to cross off Domesday Book who has been off more than a year with an injury and who might not relish such a hard race on his return, Missed Approach who is up a fair bit in the weights and who won't get such an easy time up front as he did at Cheltenham and Rathlin Rose as I'm sick of betting David Pipe horses each-way in big handicaps and watching them run no race.
I left myself with five possibles which I'll go through one by one The England and Wales Cricket Board wants to introduce an innovative ' balls' format into its new eight-team, city-based tournament. The concept could see innings consist of 15 traditional six-ball overs, and a final ball over, 20 balls shorter than traditional T20 matches.
Southampton, Birmingham, Leeds, London, Manchester, Cardiff and Nottingham have been selected as venues for the five-week competition, which starts in The new competition will take place alongside the existing T20 Blast which is expected to be unaffected by the proposed format changes. The ECB believes the concept will help to appeal to families and a more diverse and younger audience, and provide some distinction from the T20 Blast.
I came back to an essential point:. There is nothing wrong with T20! T20 works because it is a simple shortening of the game to fit in with the lifestyles of greater number of people than Test cricket allows. Will this gimmicky imitation really attract a new audience?
Ten counties, those not chosen to host T Some of the counties with Test grounds need the competition to be a success to help them financially. The real problem is that another short format will hasten the decline of longer forms domestically. In there would be no four day cricket in June and August with the Championship shoehorned into April-May and September with worse weather, green early season or tired end of season pitches and little or no relevance to Test cricket, for which we hope to produce players and currently struggle to do.
Even accepting a personal position as a traditionalist, this just feels like an idea too far. See here. Mark Selby is the defending Champion and comes to the tournament with a win in the last ranking event before the worlds, the China Open. This follows a mixed season but he does tend to peak for the end of the season. The five time world champion has five ranking event wins and another two finals this season. The draw for the event, awaiting the 16 qualifiers but with the seedings in place looks quite lopsided.
The top half of the draw is very tough and the top quarter especially which contains Selby, Murphy, Allen and Kyren Wilson. In the second quarter Higgins and Trump are scheduled to meet in the quarter finals. The bottom half looks more open from a betting perspective. Ding and Hawkins are the top seeds in the third quarter while in the bottom quarter Ronnie has Mark Williams and Neil Robertson. As last year, I have found myself watching some of qualifying on grainy live streams aware that the change to the structure of qualifying gives opportunities in the first round at the Crucible stuff.
Firstly, the standard between the best qualifers and the bottom half of the top sixteen seeds is closer than it has been for some time. Just to take one example Ryan Day from outside the 16 has won three ranking events this year and the depth in the player base is greater as young players break through.
Secondly whether you rank 17 th or th , you have to play three matches in qualifying unlike the prior system where players ranked got a bye to the final round. The result is that each of the sixteen qualifiers is battle hardened through three long form matches that only concluded Wednesday, with the tournament starting tomorrow. Last year this column successfully picked Xiao Guodong to upset a seed. Overall four qualifiers won their first match at the crucible, and seven the year before the first under the new qualifying system.
Ryan Day — provisionally ranked 13, three tournament wins, a semi and four quarter finals this season, much improved and beat Ebdon to qualify which takes patience. Stephen Maguire. A few temperament issues, but essentially a top 16 player in ability with two semi finals this season including the UK.
Joe Perry, a former top 16 player who is experienced and is one big result away from getting back in after four quarter finals this season. Xiao Guodong. One of the more reliable Chinese players outside the top two, three quarter finals this season. Lost 8 frames only in three qualifying matches, mirroring his performance before he won in the first round at the Crucible last year. Jack Lisowski, off the back of a break-through season with a semi final and two quarter-finals and crushing McManus in the final round.
Liam Highfield, a debutant at the crucible is a negative but I like what I see when he has appeared on our screens. Luca Brecel, fantastic natural talent and a ranking event winning back in October in China that put him in the sixteen. Ali Carter, not much form having not been beyond the third round in his last 8 ranking tournaments. Anthony McGill who lost in the first round last year and lost in the first round in China recently, albeit in a best of Mark Allen who won the 16 runner Masters in January beating a sick Ronnie along the way but has been beyond the first round twice since focus and concentration issues the times I have seen him and is outside the provisional top I then watched the draw to see if any from these two lists matched up, and then off to check match odds to see if there is value.
Lisowski drew Bingham, two months back from his ban but in good nick, successive quarter finals recently. This is perhaps a bit unbecoming, but Allen has always struck me as a man for whom the prospect of doing anything before midday was a little taxing. However lets ignore that. There is also an intention to have cars better suited to race one another, making the driver the predominant factor and maintaining the unique design while standardising parts that are not relevant to fans.
Christian Horner of Red Bull, who has long been critical of the rules as they stand, was broadly optimistic. On creating a better show, a more affordable F1. The big question is the devil in the detail. They have put big issues up but how is it going to be delivered?
Ferrari and Mercedes have previously expressed disquiet about the proposed changes with the former threatening to leave and the task now facing Liberty is reaching agreement with them. Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team principal was cautious about the proposed cost cap. You need to ask how you can achieve a sustainable business model without having any hardship on anybody.
The teams below them on the grid, for whom this represents a chance to close what has become a vast gap to the top three, were unsurprisingly positive. Claire Williams, the Williams deputy team principal, was enthusiastic. Brawn has described the current regulations as a deterrent to new teams and his plans met with approval from Andy Palmer, the head of Aston Martin.
This is a very positive step in the right direction. Betting Emporium. Royal Vacation is a big price, will like the ground and the stable are in form but this trip does seem a big doubt. Bigbadjohn goes on soft ground it's the trip that is a doubt. Step Back has been solidly backed for this all week. He is young and improving and the ground should be fine but he seems short enough when we don't know if he'll stay and consiidering the stable who tend to mean an inflation in the prices. Thousands of fans decked out in Buccaneers gear lined the river on a sun-splashed day to cheer on stars such as quarterback Tom Brady, tight end Rob Gronkowski and many others. The team arrived by bus and boarded at least four boats. Mayor Jane Castor again emphasized that people attending the parade must wear masks outdoors and observe social distancing rules. It appeared many were abiding by the mask order but many others were not.
There were also dozens of people on private boats, kayaks and other watercraft crowding the river to catch a glimpse of the team. They were directed to stay at least 50 feet 15 metres from the boats carrying players. Houston Texans president Jamey Rootes has resigned after more than 20 years, the team's latest move in an off-season of upheaval. The announcement was made Wednesday and said that Rootes was leaving to pursue interests as a writer, public speaker, consultant and professor at the University of Houston. Rootes was hired in as the Texans began preparations for their expansion season in He was responsible for all of the team's business functions, including stadium naming rights and sponsorships, ticket sales and co-ordinating radio and TV broadcasting relationships.
His departure continued the Texans' off-season turnover. The team hired coach David Culley and general manager Nick Caserio last month to replace Bill O'Brien, who held both jobs and was fired after an start. The Texans also face uncertainty on the field with star quarterback Deshaun Watson requesting a trade last month.
